### 2023-05-05 · Q1B · Previous-paper question. Explain the definition of promotion and distinguish it from advertising. [5 marks]

#### Answer

**Definition.** Marketing identifies and satisfies customer needs through a coordinated offering. Advertising is a paid, sponsor-identified form of communication. Public relations builds relationships with the organisation’s publics.

**In simple words.** Marketing poora business offer hai; advertising us offer ke baare mein paid message hai.

## Understand it step by step

1. **Product:** what is offered, including quality, design and service. A good advertisement cannot reliably compensate for a product that fails its promise.
2. **Price and place:** price is what the customer gives up; place concerns access and distribution. Interest cannot become a purchase if the product is unavailable.
3. **Promotion:** this marketing-mix element includes advertising, sales promotion, personal selling and PR-related communication. A short-term coupon is sales promotion; the paid message announcing it is advertising.
4. **PR:** audiences include employees, communities, journalists, investors and customers. PR is broader than gaining free newspaper coverage.

## See it in use

#### Illustrative example · A new café

The café improves its menu (product), sets a student combo price, chooses a location near college and pays for a local ad. A launch discount is sales promotion. Meeting residents about parking concerns is community PR.

| Tool | Function | Illustrative use |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Advertising | Paid identified message | A local paid notice for a course |
| PR | Relationships and public understanding | A public briefing answering concerns |
| Direct marketing / direct advertising | Addressed communication seeking a response | A consent-based email invitation |
| Sales promotion | A time-bound incentive | A clearly disclosed introductory coupon |
| Personal selling | Individual explanation and dialogue | A salesperson demonstrates equipment and answers questions |

#### Illustrative example · Integrated launch

The paid ad introduces the service; the sales team explains options; a promotion encourages trial; PR addresses community questions. All must state consistent conditions.
