#### Answer

**Definition.** Brand management coordinates product experience, identity and communication to maintain a clear and credible brand over time.

**In simple words.** Har touchpoint pe promise same aur experience reliable hona chahiye.

## Understand it step by step

1. **Fragmented markets:** groups differ in needs and behaviour; one message may not work for all. Variants add complexity and may increase total coordination costs.
2. **Fragmented media:** audiences use different platforms and attention is divided. Adapt the format while keeping the core position recognisable.
3. **Informed audiences:** reviews and comparison tools let buyers challenge claims. Transparency and service response matter.
4. **Shopper versus user:** the person buying may differ from the person using. Packaging, retail availability and point-of-sale messages must support the purchase.
5. **Extension and consistency:** new variants can create growth opportunities but also confusion, cannibalisation or dilution if they fit poorly.

## See it in use

#### Illustrative example · A shampoo range

Different variants may serve different hair needs, while a consistent naming and packaging system helps shoppers navigate them. A new variant is useful only if customers understand whom it serves and its supported benefit.

**Definition.** A line extension adds a variant within an existing product category. A brand extension uses an existing brand name in a different product category.

**In simple words.** Same category ka new version = line; new category = brand extension.

## Understand it step by step

1. **Line extension:** a new pack size, flavour or suitable variant within the existing category. State the category before classifying.
2. **Brand extension:** the name moves into another category. Familiarity may help trial if the new offering fits the brand’s credibility.
3. **Benefits:** meet varied needs and use existing recognition. Benefits are possible, not automatic profits.
4. **Risks:** variants may cannibalise sales or confuse buyers; a poorly fitting new category can weaken associations.

## See it in use

#### Illustrative example · A fictional FreshLeaf brand

FreshLeaf lemon tea added to its tea range is a line extension. FreshLeaf-branded kettles are a brand extension from tea into appliances. A different package size is not automatically a new category.
