### 2025-02-25 · Q1D · Previous-paper question. Explain the Concepts—Press Release and Publicity. [5 marks]

#### Answer

**Definition.** A press release presents a newsworthy organisational development in a clear factual format intended for media use.

**In simple words.** Ad ka exaggerated slogan nahi; factual news lead likho.

## Understand it step by step

1. **Headline and date:** state the actual development and when the release is issued.
2. **Lead:** answer the essential who, what, when and where; include why it matters.
3. **Body:** add relevant detail, evidence, conditions and an approved attributed quote if available. Never fabricate a real person’s quotation.
4. **Background:** brief factual organisational information and links to supporting material.
5. **Contact:** a designated authorised person for media enquiries. In a classroom draft use clearly labelled placeholders rather than inventing real contacts.

#### Illustrative example · Illustrative campus-library release

Headline: “Campus library extends evening hours during examinations.” Lead: “The campus library will remain open until 10 pm from 1–15 November for enrolled students.” Body: state access rules, available services and where updates will appear. These dates and the institution are fictional for practice.

**Definition.** Publicity is public attention or media coverage; PR is the wider planned relationship function. Advertising buys controlled space or time. Propaganda typically seeks ideological persuasion through a selected viewpoint, often limiting balanced examination.

**In simple words.** Coverage ek tool/outcome hai; PR poora relationship function hai.

## Understand it step by step

1. **PR versus publicity:** publicity can be unplanned, positive or negative. PR includes research, internal communication, issues and crisis work, not only media coverage.
2. **PR versus advertising:** advertising buys placement and controls the submitted creative. Independent journalists decide their own coverage. PR programmes still require resources; “PR is free” is inaccurate.
3. **Credibility and control:** independent coverage may carry perceived credibility, but its wording and tone cannot be guaranteed.
4. **Ethical persuasion:** PR should use accurate information and dialogue. Manipulative concealment and fabricated evidence undermine trust regardless of the label used.

#### Illustrative example · Product launch

A paid newspaper page is advertising. A reporter’s independent article is publicity. Researching consumer concerns, briefing staff, answering media questions and reviewing feedback belong to the wider PR programme.
