Q5A. State and elaborate in brief any 5 Do’s and Don’ts for response during landslides. [10 marks]
Answer
| Do | Do not |
|---|---|
| Follow warnings and leave threatened routes/areas when advised. | Do not approach an active slide to watch or photograph it. |
| Report new cracks, tilting trees or suddenly changed drainage. | Do not assume a quiet slope is safe immediately after movement. |
| Use known safe routes outside the runout area. | Do not cross unstable debris or a closed mountain road. |
| Help others from safe positions and contact trained rescue services. | Do not enter unsupported excavations or damaged structures. |
| Return only after assessment and clearance. | Do not clear debris or alter drainage without appropriate guidance. |
These precautions address both the moving slope and its runout, meaning the area that displaced rock, soil or debris can reach. A person standing below the visible break can still be exposed. Rainfall may continue to weaken the slope after the first movement, so a pause is not evidence of stability. Reporting cracks or drainage changes helps competent authorities assess the site; members of the public should not approach an unstable slope to measure it. Use locally designated safe destinations and official road-closure information. Search, slope excavation and debris removal require trained teams because careless work can trigger further movement or obstruct drainage.
