Q7A. Draft the checklist of 10 precautions to be considered in responding to Heat Wave. [10 marks]
Answer
- Follow heat alerts. Adjust plans before the hottest period.
- Reduce strenuous exposure. Reschedule outdoor work where possible and take rest breaks.
- Use shade and cooling. Seek cooler spaces and improve safe ventilation/cooling.
- Drink safe fluids. Maintain hydration consistent with personal medical advice.
- Wear suitable clothing. Use lightweight clothing and sun protection appropriate to the setting.
- Never leave people in hot vehicles. Closed parked vehicles can become dangerous rapidly.
- Check on vulnerable people. Support older people, infants, outdoor workers and isolated people.
- Prepare water and power arrangements. Keep essential water and service access available during disruption.
- Avoid unsafe assumptions. Alcohol and ignoring worsening symptoms are not protective strategies.
- Seek urgent help for serious illness. Confusion, collapse or severe heat illness needs urgent medical attention.
