### Q1D. Discuss in detail role of Trainings and drills as a mitigation measure adopted for Industrial Gas Leaks. [5 marks]

#### Answer

Training and drills turn an industrial gas-leak plan into practised action. Five roles are:

1. **Recognise and report the hazard.** Teach workers the relevant detector/alarm signals, how to report a suspected release and which authorised team identifies the chemical. An unusual odour is not a safe universal detection method.
2. **Practise the correct protective action.** Rehearse evacuation or shelter-in-place according to the chemical-specific plan and official instructions. Use planned alternate routes and assistance arrangements; ordinary masks are not a universal gas protection system.
3. **Assign roles and account for people.** Train supervisors, wardens and control-room staff in notification, safe isolation by authorised personnel, headcounts and reporting missing workers. Visitors and contractors must be included.
4. **Coordinate specialist response.** Practise communication with fire/hazmat teams, district authorities and hospitals. Share the chemical identity, location, hazards and access information so responders select suitable protection and treatment.
5. **Find and correct weaknesses safely.** A simulated drill tests alarms, communication, routes and responsibilities. Debrief delays or confusion and repeat after corrections. Do not release hazardous gas or create real exposure for a drill.

#### Illustrative application · A school evacuation drill

A planned drill tests whether alarms are understood, routes are usable, people needing assistance receive it and everyone reaches the assembly point. The debrief identifies bottlenecks and changes the plan. Merely walking outside without review is an incomplete exercise.
