Q6(b) Aircraft movement between hubs (Markov chain) [10]
Re-examination · 31 Jan 2026
100-mark timed practice using the actual Re-exam 2026 paper. Q1 compulsory; any four of Q2–Q7. Worked solutions are below the questions.
Question. Planes at A: 50% stay, 30% to B, 20% to C. At B: 40% to A, 40% stay, 20% to C. At C: 25% to A, 25% to B, 50% stay. 1. Construct the matrix. 2. Interpret retention and movement. 3. Draw the diagram. 4. For [30, 40, 30] find the next night's distribution. 5. Which airport is a long-term net gainer or loser? [10 marks]
Answer
Given
All transition values are given in the full question. State order: A, B, C. Initial vector [30, 40, 30].
To find
The matrix, diagram, next-step vector and long-run comparison.
Formula and why it applies
Rows mean current state; columns mean next state. For each destination, multiply each origin amount by its transition probability, then add.
x_{next}=x_{now}P\qquad\pi=\pi P,\quad\sum_i\pi_i=1Solution
Step 1. Convert every origin row to probabilities
| From / To | A | B | C |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 0.5 | 0.3 | 0.2 |
| B | 0.4 | 0.4 | 0.2 |
| C | 0.25 | 0.25 | 0.5 |
Each row sums to 1 because it lists all possible destinations for that origin. A percentage is divided by 100: 25%=.25.
Step 2. Interpret entries and draw the transitions
Diagonal entries are the fractions staying at their current state; off-diagonal entries are fractions moving to a different state. Each arrow uses its origin row and destination column. These fractions have different origin populations, so adding raw column probabilities does not give the number arriving.
Step 3. Next step: collect all contributions to A
| Origin | Current count/share | Transition to A | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 30 | 0.5 | 30 × 0.5 = 15 |
| B | 40 | 0.4 | 40 × 0.4 = 16 |
| C | 30 | 0.25 | 30 × 0.25 = 7.5 |
A_{new}=15+16+7.5=38.5Step 4. Next step: collect all contributions to B
| Origin | Current count/share | Transition to B | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 30 | 0.3 | 30 × 0.3 = 9 |
| B | 40 | 0.4 | 40 × 0.4 = 16 |
| C | 30 | 0.25 | 30 × 0.25 = 7.5 |
B_{new}=9+16+7.5=32.5Step 5. Next step: collect all contributions to C
| Origin | Current count/share | Transition to C | Contribution |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 30 | 0.2 | 30 × 0.2 = 6 |
| B | 40 | 0.2 | 40 × 0.2 = 8 |
| C | 30 | 0.5 | 30 × 0.5 = 15 |
C_{new}=6+8+15=29Step 6. Stationarity: find C first
c=0.2(a+b)+0.5cc=0.2(1-c)+0.5c=0.2+0.3c0.7c=0.2\quad c=2/7Step 7. Find B in terms of A
b=0.3a+0.4b+0.25c0.6b=0.3a+0.25cb=0.5a+\frac5{12}cStep 8. Use a+b=1−c
a+0.5a+\frac5{12}\frac27=1-\frac27=\frac571.5a=\frac57-\frac5{42}=\frac{25}{42}a=\frac{25}{42}\div\frac32=\frac{25}{63}b=1-\frac{25}{63}-\frac{18}{63}=\frac{20}{63}Step 9. Compare the stationary shares with the initial shares
| State | Initial share | Stationary share | Change in share | Conclusion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | 0.3 | 0.396825397 | 0.096825397 | Gains |
| B | 0.4 | 0.317460317 | -0.082539683 | Loses |
| C | 0.3 | 0.285714286 | -0.014285714 | Loses |
Compare like with like: divide counts by their total before comparing with stationary probabilities. “Stationary” means one more step leaves the shares unchanged.
